Abstract     The author presents the problems of evaluating patients with intestinal infections in a family medicine office. These infections are considered a public health threat. Therefore, primary prevention is very important. The physician has to take a thorough medical history, perform a detailed physical examination, and assess potential threats for the patient and his/her contacts, as well as the possibility of etiological therapy. Most patients with acute intestinal infections do not require specialist care and in most cases, therapy consists solely of rehydration. Adult patients may rarely require antibiotic therapy. All cases of intestinal infections must be notified.
