Abstract     Enteric viruses namely calici-, rota -, adeno- and other viruses, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Cl. difficile, E. coli and other bacterial agents, as well as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, are the most common causes of gastroenteritis among hospitalized patients nn pediatric or geriatric wards, or among the residents and/or staff in hospitals, nursing homes for the elderly and day-care centres. In most cases, infectious agents are transmitted directly or indirectly via contaminated hands and environment. Occasionally, an outbreak is caused by contaminated food or drinking water (hydric outbreak).
