Abstract     Main biological function of vitamin D is maintenance of homeostasis of calcium. Most important souce of vitamin D is synthesis in skin under ultraviolet radiation. When skin production is inadequate, vitamin D must be inserted as "vitamin". Regular food is scarce on vitamin D and only same food has greater amount of it. Around 1 billion people in the world supposedly have deficiency of vitamin D. When deficiency is extreme the rickets is manifest or osteomalacia by adults. Usually is the case clinical unsuspected relative insufficiency with decreasing mineral bone density and progression of osteoporosis. Status of vitamin D with serum 25-hydroksiholecalciferol concentration. Along the main biological function vitamin D we appreciated multiple other functions in the body. This is autocrine or paracrine function, which is independent and separate from regulation of serum calcium and phosphorus concentration.
Summary     Glavna biološka naloga vitamina D je vzdrževanje homeostaze kalcija. Glavni vir je tvorba v koži pod vplivom ultraviolične svetlobe. Kadar ga ne dobimo dovolj s sončenjem, ga je potrebno vnesti kot "vitamin", vendar ga je v običajni hrani malo in le redka živila ga vsebujejo. Ocenjuje se, da ima okoli 1 milijarda ljudi na svetu pomanjkanje vitamina D. Pomanjkanje je lahko hudo, kar se kaže kot rahitis oziroma osteomalacija pri odraslih. Največkrat gre za relativno pomanjkanje, ki je klinično neopazno, vendar povzroča izgubo mineralne kostne gostote in vodi v osteoporozo. Stanje vitamina D v telesu ocenimo s koncentracijo 25-hidroksholekalciferola v serumu. Ob osnovni biološki vlogi spoznavamo učinke in vplive vitamina D na številnih drugih področjih. Govorimo o avtokrinem ali parakrinem delovanju, ki je ločeno od regulacije koncentracijeserumskega kalcija in fosfata.
