Abstract     European Resuscitation Council issued in November 2005 new guidelines for neonatal resuscitation. The guidelines do not define the only way that resuscitation at birth should be achieved; they merely represent a widely accepted view of how resuscitation at birth can be carried out both safely and effectively. Approximately 10 % of newborns require some assistance to begin breathing at birth, and about 1 % require extensive resuscitative measures.
