Abstract     In prosthodontic rehabilitation of edentulous patients, new relationships are established between the jaws. The classical procedure for recording intermaxillary relations is usually successful, although it relies heavily on the dentist's subjective judgement. In complex cases, a more objective assessment of the vertical dimension of occlusion and the position of the occlusal plane can be obtained with the use of lateral cephalometry. With this method, the spatial relationships of the teeth, jaws and the cranial base are assessed in the sagittal plane. Results are evaluated by comparing measured values with standard values. Since the method provides accurate, objective data on the vertical jaw relationship, it can be used also for research purposes.
