Abstract     Cervical cancer remains a critical public health problem that is second only to breast cancer in the overall disease burden for women throughout the world. The fact that infection with certain HPV types is now recognised as a cause of this disease has led to new research fronts on the prevention of cervical cancer. Prophylactic HPV vaccines have been developed that are protective against cervical cancer precursors caused by HPV 16 and 18. Anogenital disease induced by HPV 6 and 11 can be controlled as well. The benefits of prophylactic vaccination by reducing both benign and malignant HPV associated genital disease are immense both in economic terms and in terms of reduced health care costs. Even more importantly they lead to improvements in women's health and wellbeing.
