Abstract     Urological management of patients with LUTS/BPH is necessary when medical treatment is unsuccessful, as well as in patients with major micturition problems, recurrent urinary tract infections, acute or chronic urinary retention, hematuria, increased serum creatinine and PSA, suspicious digital rectal prostate examination, stones and diverticuli in the urinary bladder, and hydronephrosis. In addition to recommended diagnostic investigations which can be done by general practitioners (clinical history, digital rectal examination of prostate, symptom scores - IPSS, measurement of serum creatinine and PSA, urinanalysis), urologists must perform the US of the urinary tract and prostate, and uroflow measurement. There are some optional tests as well, such as pressure-flow studies, urography and endoscopy of the lower urinary tract, which must be done before surgical treatment. However, the majority of patients with LUTS/BPH are suitable for medical treatment. Only a few patients need to be treated with classic operations (TURP, simple open prostatectomy) or with minimal invasive procedures (microwave thermal therapy, intraprostatic stents).
