Abstract     Benign prostatic hypertrophy, nonmalignant enlargement of this gland, belongs to the most common diseases of elderly men. The diagnosis of this condition is presumptive, based on the patient's symptoms. These include urinary frequency, nocturia, weak or intermittent urine stream, straining to void, urgency, hesitancy and sensation of incomplete voiding. The recommended diagnostic procedures, according to the national guidelines, consist of medical history, evaluation of symptoms with a special questionnaire, physical examination, including abdominal palpation and genital and digital rectal examination, urinalysis, determination of the serum creatinine level, along with measurement of the serum prostate specific antigen and postvoid residual urine. Unlike patients usually treated at urological wards, men visiting their family physician can be assumed to have less pronounced signs and symptoms. The possibility that unnecessary and possibly harmful diagnostic procedures or medicines may be introduced should therefore also be taken into account.
