Abstract | Osteoporosis is becoming an increasingly serious health problem because life expectancies are getting longer, which means that there are also an increasing number of osteoporotic fractures. Although new medical treatments are being offered by the pharmaceutical industry and our knowledge of the subject is expanding, many unanswered questions remain, such as the duration of treatment, follow up of patients and the longterm effects of therapy. Every day, doctors are also confronted with ethical aspects relating to medical treatment, when for example we have to consider whether a polymorbid elderly patient really requires medication for osteoporosis in addition to numerous other medications. Because of damage that can be caused by inappropriately chosen medicines, doctors must carefully select the patients to be treated, consider the advantages of medical treatment, provide moral support to those who need treatment, and carefully observe the effects of treatment. | |
