Abstract     The article presents modern dressings for wound healing in a moist environment. Due to several advantages of moist wound climate, standard care which aims at keeping wounds dry is therefore not considered preferential. Cotton wool and gauze dressings have been gradually replaced by modern dressings. However, their use has to be carefully considered, taking a systematic approach and depending on the overall condition of the patient and the wound, as well as factors which determine the characteristics of the dressing and its mechanism of action. The broad range of available modern dressings can be divided into three main groups in terms of functionality. Each functional unit is explained in detail, along with guidance for proper use. From a strictly legal viewpoint, the safety and efficacy of modern dressings depends primarily on the assessment of when and how to use a particular dressing. Therefore, knowledge about advanced dressings is necessary to improve the clinical outcome of wound healing. It is expected that wound dressings in the future will integrate the achievements from tissue and gene engineering and nanotechnology as well in terms of providing the dressing's biomimetic properties.
