Abstract		Primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is one of the most common diseases of the urinary tract in children. Such children develop retrograde flow, i.e. backward flow of urine from the urinary bladder to the ureter, which may reach as high as the kidneys. The backward flow of urine facilitates the travel of pathogenic bacteria to the kidneys; therefore VUR is one of the main reasons for bacterial infections of the ureters and kidneys. Timely detection of VUR and quickest possible treatment of urinary tract infections may significantly prevent or at least reduce the possibility of developing renal lesions and their consequences. This paper describes the morphological and molecular characteristics of the urothelium in patients with VUR and the genetic changes in these patients known to date. Possible molecular-genetic causes and cellular-biological mechanisms for the development of VUR are presented. Current studies are aimed at the development of a noninvasive method for the diagnosis of VUR that would be based only on the analysis of the person's DNA or on the analysis of urothelial cells found in urine.
