Abstract     In Slovenia, colorectal cancer has the highest incidence of all cancers. The best prognostic factor for survival of patients with colorectal cancer is the disease stage at diagnosis. Early detection of colorectal cancer among popelation-at risk and screening of population can reduce the incidence of and mortality from the disease by 15-33%. In view of recent experiences at the international level and our potentials at the local level, the most suitable screening method for colorectal cancer in Slovenia would be faecal occult blood testing (FORT). By FORT and solonoscopy, we could detect and then treat premalignant lesions and early stages of colorectal cancer. The patients who have recently undergone colonoscopy are usually not referred to FOBT for at least five years. From the results of a survey done among Slovenian gastroeneterologists and surgeons performing colonoscopies it was concluded that 9500 colonoscopies could additionally be performed yearly, which is a significantly higher number than the number of additional colonoscopies envisaged by screening. The population at risk to develop colorectal cancer is not included the screening program for colorectal cancer because the management of this population follows the recommendations for early cancer detection that are different from those for screening.
