Abstract		Asthma is a complex respiratory syndrome characterized by airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. Most often the triggers of asthma attacks are viruses and allergens. Asthmatic patients are mosre sensitive to virus infections because of inappropriate innate immune response in airway epithelial cells and therefore their response to drugs varies greatly. New studies in patophysiology of asthma will change the therapeutic approach, improving drug efficacy and mitigating complications.
Summary		Astma je kompleksna respiratorna bolezen z značilnim - astmatskim vnetjem in preodzivnostjo dihalnih poti. Sprožilci poslabšanj so virusne okužbe in alergeni. Bolniki z astmo pogosteje obolevajo zaradi virusnih okužb in posledičnih poslabšanj dihanja zaradi pomanjkljivega primarnega imunskega odgovora respiratornih epitelnih celic, oziroma zmanjšane tvorbe interferonov v teh celicah. Odgovor bolnika na zdravljenje je zelo različen. Nove raziskave o patofiziologiji astme bodo spremenile terapevtski pristop in zagotovile varnejše in učinkovitejše zdravljenje.
