Abstract     This case-control cross-sectional study investigated a possible association between interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene polymorphisms (1663T/C, 251A/T) and myocardial infarction (MI) among patients with type 2 diabetes in the Slovene population (Caucasians). The second objective was to investigate the impact of IL-8 gene polymorphisms on serum IL-8levels. The study population for this cross-sectional analysis consisted of 143 patients with MI and 321 patients with no history of coronary artery disease (control group). The study failed to demonstrate the association of 1663 T/C polymorphism and 251 A/T polymorphism of the IL-8 gene with MI in type 2 diabetic patients. Moreover, it also failed to demonstrate a significant affect of the tested IL-8 gene polymorphisms (1663T/C, 251A/T) on serum IL-8levels in type 2 diabetics. Serum IL-8levels in 78 diabetics were not significantly higher than those of 25 controls without diabetes. Additionally, serum IL-8levels in 18 diabetics with MI were not statistically significantly different from those of 60 diabetics without coronary artery disease. It may be concluded that the tested polymorphisms of the IL-8 gene (1663T/C, 251A/T) are not associated with MI. Therefore, they may not be used as genetic markers of MI in type 2 diabetes.
