Abstract | Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) are a rare, genetically heterogeneous group of diseases caused by inherent defects in the immune system. More than 120 distinct genes have been identified, whose abnormaliries account for more than 200 different forms of PID. These diseases generally are considered to be relatively uncommon, however, they are sufficiently common that primary care physicians are likely to see patients with underlying PID in their practice and should refer patients with recurring, unusual or serious infections for testing. The revised classification and epidemiology of the more common PID is presented in this review together with some recent findings that can potentially contribute to improved diagnostics and treatment of patients with PID. | |
