Abstract     Characteristic developmental and immunological features in neonates and infants, such as passive protection by acquired maternal immunoglobulins, may conceal a possible underlying immunodeficiency. Considering these characteristics and recognizing data from the family history, an awareness regarding specific prenatal and postnatal risk factors together with a carefully performed clinical examination and surveillance of the type and course of infection can also lead to early recognition of primary immunodeficiency states in children in this age group. Early suspicion of primary immunodeficiency disease will prevent possible complications and lead to an earlier diagnostic work/up, definitive diagnosis and treatment.
