Abstract     Chronic illness is defined as an illness that is long term and is either incurable or has residual features that result in limitarions in daily living requiring special assistance or adaptation in function. This includes dependency on medication, special diets, medical technology support and the need for medical and nursing care to a greater extent than what is required for ongoing health maintenance. The most common chronic lung diseases in children are described in this article. The multidisciplinary health team works very closely to ensure a holistic approach to the care of children and young adults with chronic lung disease. The nursing sister's responsibility to children, their families and co-workers encompasses advocacy, clinical management, advice and support, education, research and management.
