Abstract     A 3-year-old boy developed extreme anaemia 10 days after treatment for a sore throat. He had no other symptoms. Full blood count revealed Er 0.99 1012/L, Hg 19.1 g/L, Hct 5.5 %, MCV 55.5 fL, WBC 4.18 109/L, Plt 778 109/L, no reticulocytes. Serum immunoglobulin levels were normal for age, and the bone marrow was normocellular. The treatment protocol for aregenerative anaemia was followed for 5 months, but without success. During this time serum immunoglobulin levels decreased and incapsulated bacteria were isolated on several occasions. Additional laboratory examinations, performed at St. Anna Kinderspital, Vienna, Austria, revealed pure erythroid hypoplasia due to chronic parvovirus infection, common variable immunodeficiency and hypogammaglobulinaemia. In the following 5 months the child was treated with high doses of intravenous immunoglobulins. To date, his response to the therapy has been very good.
