Abstract     Background. Published results of clinical studies concerning the impairment of cardiovascular function in primary headaches are to a certain extent contradictory. The author tried to establish the degree of impairment of cardiovascular reflexes in migraine and tension-type headache and to ascertain which division of the autonomic nervous system is most affected. Methods. A cpmbination of four cardiovascular reflexes was performed by the subjects: the Valsalva manoeuvre, the deep breathing test, the handgrip test and the orthostatic test. Results obtained in a group of 45 patients with migraine and in a group of 45 patients with tension-type headache of both sexes aged 21 to 50 years and in an age-matched control group of 45 healthy volunteers, as well as results obtained in different patients groups, were compared. Results. Diastolic blood pressure increase and particularly heart rate increase during sustained handgrip were significantly reduced in the headache groups, when compared to the control group, while the results of the remaining tests did not significantly differ between the control and headache groups. No significant differences were found between the group of patients with migraine and the group of patients with tension-type headache. Conclusions. Results indicate that sympathetic function is impaired in migraine and tension-type headache patients.
