Abstract     In the period observed (from 2002 to 2006), the most frequent reason for sick leave is disease and disease also causes the highest per cent of sick leave (the highest total per cent in 2004 - 3.4 `). In frequency, disease is followed by injuries outside and at work. According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), the most frequent reasons for sick leave in individual groups are: musculoskeletal disorders, followed by injuries outside and at work. Regarding economic activities, the greatest number of days is lost in construction in men and in health and social work in women. In the youngest population of the employed aged 19 or less, the reason for the highest per cent of sick leave is injuries and poisonings outside and at work. In the age group from 20 to 44, the injuries and poisonings outside work occupy the first place and are followed by the musculoskeletal disorders. In women belonging to this age group, the longest sick leave is due to pregnancy, labour and post-natal period. In the population aged 45 to 64, which is the most numerous active population, and in the population above 64, the musculoskeletal disorders appear most frequently. An identical picture can also be observed in workers who work part-time. Regarding the loads, harmfulness and dangers in working environments workers are exposed to in various economic activities, risk assessment or a safety statement with risk assessment represents a basis for the management of safety and protection of workers' health. The results of the study into sick leave show which risk assessments in particular should be most carefully made and which concrete measures should be taken based on these assessments. In risk assessment, a holistic approach is therefore necessary, taking account of various steps of assessment, various needs of individual employers and changes in a working environment.
