Abstract     Teeth are suspended in the jaw bone by a network of collagenous fibers, which exhibit a certain degree of physiological mobility. Hypermobility can result from widening of the periodontal ligament caused by resorption of alveolar bone due to forces acting on the Both crown. or from reduced height of the periodontal supporting tissues caused by periodontal sal disease. Successful periodontal treatment cannot restore the supporting structures to their dint former height. However, if the width of the periodontal ligament is unchanged, the amplitude of root movement within the remaining periodontium is the same as in a tooth with normal height of periodontal bone. Evidence from many longtudinal studies shows that teeth with severely reduced but healthy periodontal support can function either individually or as abutments for many years without any further loss of attachment. Splinting is only indicated if the mobility disturbs the patients masticatory function or chewing comfort. On the contrary, treatment with occlusal adjustment or splinting, directed towards the trauma alone. may reduce the mobility of the traumatized teeth in the short term.. but it will not prevent further breakdown of the supporting apparatus.
