Abstract     Periodontitis is an Inflammation of the tooth-supporting tissues, which leads to apical migration of the functional epithelium and progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The primary aetiologic agents of periodontitis are bacteria present in the subgingival dental biofilm, but the extent of periodontal tissue destruction is modulated by the host's immune response. The infectious nature of periodontal disease and limitations of mechanical therapy justify the inclusion of systemic antibiotics Into the standard treatment protocol for certain forms of periodontitis. In patients with chronic periodontitis, systemic antibiotic therapy is indicated only if all available forms of periodontal treatment including surgery have proved ineffective. Systemic administration of antibiotics is associated with certain risks such as emergence of resistant bacterial strains and harmful side-effects. Therefore its advantages and disadvantages should be carefully considered, taking into account the patient's general health and other medication.
