Abstract | Tooth extraction, trauma and periodontal disease result in bone volume loss of the alveolar ridge. Procedures for alveolar ridge preservation and augmentation are particularly important in implant dentistry, since optimal implant placement calls for adequate quantity and quality of alveolar bone. Alveolar ridge augmentation in the horizontal and vertical planes is accomplished with the use of various barrier membranes, bone grafts and bone splitting. The vertical dimension can be increased by distraction osteogenesis. These methods can be used separately or in combination. We present two case reports, illustrating alveolar ridge volume preservation following tooth extraction, and bone augmentation following trauma. The procedures were performed in preparation for implant placement. A mixture of autogenous and bovine bone covered with a bioresorbable collagen membrane was used in both patients. | |
