Abstract     Background. There are recent reports about hepatitis A virus (VHA) infections linked to the solvent detergent treated (SD) factor VIII concentrates. We studied patients treated with SDconcentrates since 1991 to evaluate possible VHA infection. Methods. Blood samples from 129 patients with haemophilia and von Willebrand's disease (vWd) and 180 healthy blood donors were tested in March 1993 for VHA antibodies (EIA, Sorin Biomedica, Italy). Results. Serum IgG antibodies to VHA werefound in 22.4 per cent of patients and in 58.3 per cent of blood donors. The group of haemophilia and vWd patients less than 20 years of age could be evaluated. No VHA seroconversion can be linked to SD-concentrates. In a boy with haemophilia B the time of VHA seroconversion can not be determined. He was treated in 1989-91 with plasma and heat treated F IX, in August 1991 with SD-treated F IX. Conclusions. Prevalence of VHA-IgG positive haemophilia and von vWd patients is less than the half of blood donors. There was no VHA seroconuersion linked to SD-concentrates in a large group of haemophilia and vWd patients aged less than 20 years. The same is most probably true for haemophilia B. For the time being there is no reason to change our use of SD-treated concentrates.
