Abstract     Background: Capillary hemangioma of the orbit is the most frequent vascular tumor in children. We are reporting on successful corticosteroid therapy for such a hemangioma in the case of a 6-month-old girl. Methods and patients: The 6-month-old girl presented with marked swelling of both left eyelids. A temporal forward and upward dislocation of the left globe was evident. The diagnosis was confirmed by means of CT, MRI and angiography. Due to the risk of deprivation amblyopia, an active treatment was indicated. Results: The oral methylprednisolone therapy was administered under permanent pediatric control. The initial dose was 1 mg/kg BW/day, i.e. 16 mg three times weekly. After four weeks there was a marked regression of the hemangioma, the fixation was central in both eyes. Therefore over the next five months the dose was reduced by 2 mg every week. There were no side effects. One year and four months after the introduction of therapy there is no evidence of recurrence or strabismus. Conclusions: In our patient this type of therapy was extremely successful and without complications. Close cooperation with the pediatrician and well-informed parents are both of extreme importance.
