Abstract		Whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity was determined in cows (n = 171) and sheep (n = 71) in twelve different areas of Slovenia. The lowest blood glutathione peroxidase activity (71.2 micro kat/L) was measured in cows from the Radovna Valley. The highest whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity was estimated in cows from Podlog (303.7 micro kat/L) and in sheep from Jarenina (mean = 272 micro kat/L). In cows from the Radovljica Basin the mean whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity from 197.3 to 220.5čkat/L was established. Similar values were obtained at Jezersko (160.1 micro kat/L) and on Ljubljansko Barje (Ljubljana Moor) (219.9 micro kat/L and 134.3 micro kat/L). The sheep from the Kočevje Region showed similar whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity (from 158.2 to 166.O micro kat/L). In sheep from Jezersko the whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity was 197.1 micro kat/L and in sheep from Srednji vrh 212.3 micro kat/L. According to the results of GSH-Px activity it is to be expected, that some regions in Slovenia are low in selenium and provide insufficient supplementation with this trace element.
