Title     Radiation sensitivity of thyroid glands in hypocalcemic and hypercalcemic rats

Abstract     In the experiment of 11 months duration 45 female Wistar rats being two months old received. 99 gm, 6 gm or 30 gm calcium per kg food to reduce a state of hypocalcemia, eucalcemia or hypercalcemia. The neck region o 9 animals from each group of 15 animals was irradiated with 3 Gy of X-rays at one month. No si nificant differences in the follicular or parafollicular cell parameters were measured etween the hy ocalcernic and eucalcemic animals. Increased follicular cell activity and parafo icular hyperplasia was established in the nonirradiated hypercalcemic group. A medullary carcmoma occurred in one animal. Slight follicular cell hypertrophy and decreased number of parafollicular cells were measured in the irradiated hypercalcemic animals.
