Abstract     Direct pulp capping in permanent teeth may be performed when the dental pulp is exposed through noninfected dentine, the tooth has no recent history of spontaneous pain, and a bacteria-tight se al can be applied. The objective is to preserve avital tooth with a healthy pulp. Clinical trials have shown that long-term pulp preservation in permanent teeth may be an elusive goal. These findings have cast doubts on pulp capping as a valid clinical procedure. In this paper, studies of pulp capping are reviewed and various factors that are important for a successful outcome are discussed.
