Abstract     Microbial biofilms are made up of clusters of microorganisms attached to a surface and enveloped in a slimy matrix of their own creation. Infection of the root canal system is the cause of apical periodontitis. In infected root canals, microbial biofilms form on hard tissue surfaces, in isthmuses and dentinal tubules. Complete elimination of infection is the ultimate goal of root canal treatment. However, this goal is difficult to achieve due to the complexity of the root ci3-nal system offering numerous niches for microorganisms, as well as due to the ability of microorganisms to form a biofilm. Microorganisms in biofilms are more resistant to antiniicrobial regimes than their counterparts in planktonic form. A good understanding of the properties of biofilms present in root canals is required for the development of more successful techniques of endodontic treatment.
