Abstract     The differentiation of superficial cells during pre- and postnatal development of the mouse urinary bladder epithelium was studied and compared wich the help of morphological and cytochemical electron microscopic techniques. Cell differenCiated state was characterized by the appearance of fusiform vesicles and fully differentiaced asymmetric plasma membrane. Between days l4 and 17 of gestation only che superficial cells differentiate - horizontal differentiation. With desquamation of the dead superficiaI cells from the 17th day of gestation on, underlying intermediate cells differentiated into superficial cells in vertical direction - vertical differentiation. The vertical differentiation remained in renewing urothelium during the post-natal life. There were morphological and cytochemical differences between the horizontal and the vertical differentiation.
