Abstract     Prolonged osmificaton was used to analyse the dying ceUs in the mouse endometrium in the first hours after parturition and comparatively in the endometrium of pregnant mice. Two morphologically different cell types of mice endometrial epithelium during pregnancy and after parturition i.e. the "dark" and the "palen ones, differ also in the reduction capacity of their endoplasmic reticulum (ER) after Os impregnation. The dark cells with heavily stained endoplasmic reticulum seem to incline towards apoptosis which is much less expressed during pregnancy. Many, "pale" cells with poorly developed and unstained ER undergo a necrotic degeneration in the pospartum period. This process is completely lacking during the pregnancy. The endometrial epithelial celIs in the post partum period exhibit very strong phagocytotic capacity in "dark" as well as in "pale" cells.
