Abstract     The morphological response ofperoxisomes during intensive enlargement of Che endoplasmic reticulum induced by estradiol 17 beta stimulation of a glycoprotein vitellogenin synthesis in fish hepatocytes was measured by stereologic analysis. The results show that the enlargement of endoplasmic reticulum mernbranes coincides well with the enlargement ofperoxisomal membranes at 20 and 30 days of treatment. The constant quantity of endoplasmic reticulum membranes, between 30 and 40 days of stimulated vitellogenesis, was accompanied by a decrease in the surface density ofperoxisomal membranes. The process is reversible; in fish kept 4 days in pure wacer after 40 days of treatment the stage ofendoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomal membranes was similar to the values of untreated fish. These findings fit well to the known existence of the enzymes for Che phospholipid synthesis in endoplasmic retićulum and peroxisomes so, it is suggested that both organelles cooperate in the synthesis of membrane lipids.
