Abstract | Ferroelectric liquid crystals represent a class of materials that are fascinating from a fundamental point of view, and show a high potential for application in liquid crystal Mased electro-optic devices. In particular, in the presence of an external magnetic held, they display a very interesting phase diagram, where a re-entrant phase, Lifshitz point and Mand structure of phason excitations can be observed. Due to the strong electro-optical and magneto-optical effects of these materials, optical experiments appear to Me extremely suitable and straightforward to study both the static and dynamic properties of these fascinating phases of matter. | |
