Abstract     Background. The male and female patients, who are treated in Slovenian Centres for Prevention and Treatment of Addiction to Illicit Drugs, have an ever-increasing number of children. The purpose of the study was to determine the living conditions of their children. Materials and methods. Statistical evaluation of questionnaires concerning the patients-parents and their children, which were completed by doctors and nurses in the centres where the parents are treated. Results. The partners of more than half of the patients-mothers and of more than one fifth of the patients fathers were included in the programme for treatment of drug dependence. More than half of these parents were received the social support. More than half of the children were in the preschool age group. Three-quarters of the children lived in family units with both parents. Patients-mothers had one tenth of their children in foster care, compared to less than two percent of the children of patients-fathers. Conclusions. Because of some unfavourable social factors, the children of patients-mothers and fathers who are treated for illicit drug addiction need special care from social, preschool, health care, legislative and educational services.
