Abstract		Background. The ultrasound is used in Maribor since the year 1985 for the visual examinations of the hips in newborns and infants. Since that time the x-ray examinations of the hips are omitted. Methods and results. In the first time by ultrasound only the hips in the newborns from the risk group were examined. Since the year 1988 it is a routine screening procedure for all newborns. When 5000 newhorns have been examined, for the 500 of them the findings were analysed. Conclusions. The authors believe that the most important result is the fact, that after the 36 week of age in none of examined babies an immature hip has been found. Therefore the own results and those presented by other cited authors allow the conclusion, that both a clinical and an ultrasound examinations - already in the obstetric department-provide a diagnosis in time and enable un early adequate treatment of the congenital anomalies of the hip.
