Abstract     Background. Natural history of patients with atherosclerotic disease of lower extremities is important for therapeutic approach. Asin Slovenia we have no information about the number of patients with CCLI it was the aim of this study to estimate this number. Methods. The approach to estimating the number of patients has been based on stable number of amputations (above or below knee) for ischaemia in years 1987-1991. The average number of amputations in this period was 92 (range 88-90). It was assumpted that 25 percent of patients with CCLI require an amputation. The number of inhabitatnts between 35 and 74 years in Slovenia is 886.347. Results. Estimated average number of amputations for ischaemia is 230 per million (range 222-248). Estimated number of patients with CCLI is between 920 and 1150 per million. Conclusions. It is concluded that approximation is close to reality and that the number of patients with CCLI in Slovenia is in comparison with other countries at the top. It is also concluded that the number of patients with CCLI in last five years does not show decreasing tendencies.
