Abstract     Background. The authors wish to present the problem of patients with degenerative changes of the lumbosacral (L/S) spine and the exposure to risk factors. Methods. This study includes patients coming to outpatient department of Maribor General Hospital in the period of time between the second half of 1991 and the end of 1992. Methods such as interview, clinical examination and computer-aided statistical methods were applied. Results. 516 patients with confirmed degenerative changes of the L/S spine were investigated, 54 percent were men and 46 percent women. The average age of these patients was 48.4 +- 9.5 years, their average body weight was 78.8 +- 12.1 kg. It was established that 52.3 percent were overweight. In arranging the patients according to education and employment, it was registried that as many as 55.6 percent din not finish secondary school and that 45.9 percent did not have a full-time job. 18.6 percent had no physical strain, while largely men (87.1 percent) were exposed to physical strain; 48.6 percent were smokers or alcohol consumers, more men than women (59.9 percent : 35.4 percent). Conclusions. Patient with degenerative changes of theL/S spine were to a great extent exposed to risk factors. Our further work must be directed towards their prevention.
