Abstract     The antinutritive and thyreostatic effect of diets containing rapeseed cakes and rapseed meal with high total glucosinolate content (86.0 and 92.3 mmo Ukg) and rapeseed meal with low glucosinolate level (20.0 and 25.0 mmoU kg) was compared in two experiments on three groups of chickens. Rapeseed cakes and meal were produced from the same portions of single zero cultivars of rapeseed with high glucosinolate content. The highest antinutritive effect concerning weight gain and feed consumption was found with diets containing rapeseed meal with low glucosinolate level. There was also significant difference between the group which received feed with high glucosinolate content and th control group. Lo w weight gain was connected mainly with the decreased feed consumption of the experimental groups. The thyreostatic effect on the chickens corresponded to the dietary glucosinolate content. The differences of thyroid gland weights (P less th. 0.001) and index of the thyroid gland activation between the groups were significant while the concentration of serum T3 and T4 did not differ significantly. The results indicated that the glucosinolates in rapeseed meal with lo w level of the above mentioned products were transformed into other compounds the negative effects of which were stronger than those of glucosinolates. It seems reasonable to propose the change of legislation of most of the European countries which has so far prescribed monitoring undesirable substances in rapeseed meal for oxazolidone-2-thione and isothiocianate contents only.
