Abstract     Myosin ATP-ase activity in the muscle fibres of two hindlimb adductors (m. adductor, m. gracilis) of splaylegged and normal newborn piglets was compared. On the basis of myosin ATP-ase activity after alcali and acid preincubation types I, IIA and IIC of muscle fibres were determined. In the muscles of normal piglets a higher proportion of slow contracting type I and intermediate type IIC myofibres was found, therefore we suppose, that the process of transformation from type II into type I was retarded in splaylegged piglets. Retarded myofibre transformation in the muscles of the affected piglets is confirmed by a smaller diameter of me subtype IIA myofibres.
