Abstract		During the past decade there have been improvements in the scientific understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms, leading to the degradation and other joint structures in osteoarthritis. Aided by advances in the imaging technology, the recognized importance of synovial inflammation, and the role played by genetics, osteoarthritis is now understood as a disease of the whole joint, not the joint cartilage only. These discoveries have opened a field of opportunities for potential new therapeutic interventions.
Summary		V zadnjem desetletju se je močno izboljšalo znanstveno razumevanje patofizioloških dogajanj, ki vodijo do okvare hrustanca in posledično drugih sklepnih struktur pri osteoartritisu. Ob napredku slikovnih preiskav, prepoznavanju pomena pridruženega sklepnega vnetja in genetske nagnjenosti sedaj razumemo osteoartritis kot bolezen celotnega sklepa in ne le sklepnega hrustanca. Ta odkritja pa so odprla tudi široke možnosti razvoja novih oblik zdravljenja.
