Abstract     The ankle is subjected to weight-bearing forces per square centimeter than the hip or knee and is more commonly injured than any other joint in the body. However the prevalence of symptomatic arthritis is approximately nine times lower than that of the knee or hip. Initial attempts at ankle replacement in 1970s were disappointing. Recent advances in material development, biomechanics and surgical technique allowed the development of uncemented second-generation prosthesis, whose initial results are more encouraging with reports of up to 89 % survival rate at 5 years and 76 % rate at ten years. This review considers history, indications and complications of ankle arthroplasty and current designs.
Napredki v razvoju materialov, biomehaniki in operativni tehniki so omogočili razvoj brezcementnih endoprotez druge generacije z 89 % petletnim in 76 % desetletnim preživetjem. Članek opisuje zgodovino, indikacije in zaplete artroplastike ter novejše oblike endoproteze gležnja.
