Abstract     After decades of absence, the White-tailed Eagle returned as a breeding bird to the northwestern part of Hungary, the Little Hungarian Plain in 1998. Since then other pairs have settled (already 5 pairs in 2007). The newcomers often were not in full adult-type plumage in the first couple of years. Similar population increases are also reported from Austrian and Slovak regions near the border. In our case the colonisation can probably be explained by the immigration from further south in Hungary. To promote settlements we placed several artificial nests of which were partly occupied. The majority of pairs breeds successfully every year, however, we do not conduct analysis of unhatched eggs. According to our experience, winter feeding is only useful in brief cold spells during which water fowl numbers decrease but feed does not freeze permanently. Colour ringing has brought much useful information and has to be continued by all means. Illegal poisoning currently seems to be the most important threat for the White-tailed Eagle in the Little Hungarian Plain.
