Abstract     Introduction. Helicobacter pylori (H. p.) is the leading couse of chronic gastritis. Its etiological role in the development of duodenal ulcer has been proved. Data about the influence of H. p. on development of gastric ulcer and gastric carcinoma are increasing. Methods and results. In our study we wanted to evaluate the frequency of H. p. positive gastritis in routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopies. Data have shown that 82.9 per cent of 94 patients with chronic gastritis are H. p. positive. We have compared the golden standard Warthin-Starry silver staining of biotic specimen with the results of rapid urease test Yatrox Rhöm Pharma and with our own urease test. We have proven the specificity (93.7 per cent ; 85,7 per cent ) and the sensitivity (85.8 per cent ; 83.3 per cent ) for both urease tests respectively. Conclusions. The frequency of H. p. positive chronic gastritis is very high in our population. With the possible change in the doctrine of the duodenal ulcer treatment the diagnosis of H. p. will have a great signification in the future.
