Abstract     Background. The authors describe their views on the past present and future of the development of microelectrophysiology at Ljubljana Medical School. First, they describe the past, the evolution of concepts concerning the biophysics of neuromuscular transmission and their own contribution to the knowledge of this part of neurophysiology. Thus, the development in the past determined the state in the present and the development in the future. It has again been shown that research and teaching (at the undergraduate as well as at the postgraduate level) in medicine are inseparable entities; research supports teaching and vice versa; the research worker must be the teacher and vice versa. Last, but not least, the development of microelectrophhysiology in Slovenia has shown that research and teaching are long-term investments the benefits of which cannot be shown up in the period of time available to only one generation of teachers. Conclusions. Like many other disciplines in Slovenia, also microelectrophysiology grew from the foundations laid down by teachers of both authors. Therefore they would like to continue this tradition to pass knowledge to new generations, because the roots are the foundation for the future.
