Abstract     Background. Biological aggressiveness of breast cancer cannot be always reliably defined by classical, i. e. clinical and pathomorphological prognostic factors, which would enable the selection of adequate therapy. Research intofinding new objective prognosticfactors related to the biological properties of tumors is centred on the studies of DNA ploidy and proliferative activity of tumors by means of flow-cytometry. Methods. Using a flow-cytometer DNA ploidy was analysed in 203 cases of primary invasive breast cancer. The tissue sample for examination was taken from the resection surface of the surgically removed tumor. Results. Aneuploid DNA values were found in 72 per cent of tumors. There was a weak correlation established between the DNA ploidy and estrogen receptors, whereas the correlation between progesterone receptors, histologic type of tumor and histologic grade of malignancy turned out to be statistically significant. Conclusions. So far the results of studies of DNA ploidy in breast cancer are encouraging. Never theless, an objective evaluation of the relevance of DNA ploidy as an independent prognostic factor will be possible only after the completion of larger mainly prospective studies.
