Abstract		Cancer is a common name for a group of approximately l80 different diseases of more or less known etiology, and accordingly also of different possibilities of their prevention. Development of a particular type of cancer depends on a range of synergistically acting factors from the environment, lifestyle, genetic makeup, and chance. Primary prevention involves changing lifestyte and environmental factors by health education and legislation. Several factors associated with an increased cancer risk as smoking, alcohol beverages, diet, reproductive and sexual behaviour occupation, environmental pollution, certain drugs, ionising and nonionising radiation, biologic and psychologic factors are discussed along with the possible preventive measures.
