Abstract		Background. The development of surgery for peptic ulcer in the world and in our country is described. Methods. Our athology- a 45 year series of 6294 patients with peptic ulcer operated on from 1st January 1948 to 31st December 1992: 2172 patients with gastric ulcer and 4122 patients with duodenal ulcer indications for operation and operative methods are presented. Results. Over these 45 years there have been some important changes: the number of patients with peptic ulcer requiring surgery has been reduced significantly and the indication rates have altered. Conclusions. The peptic ulcer surgery has become again mostly the surgery of complications of the disease.
