Abstract     The honeybee (Apis mellifera), is used throughout the world by beekepers; therefore is the bee species most commonly involved instinging acidents. Beside imidiate pain and slight swelling, usually the bee sting has no serious consequence. Death or clinically importantincidents are rare and most often are caused by anaphylactic shock or pharyngeal edema and raspiratory obstruction. Less commonly, deathoccurs from the toxic effects of massive envenomation involving hundreds to thousands of stings. Renal failure and cardiovascular complications are most serious events due to direct toxicity. As the venom of honeybees is a mixture of many biologically active components, it is of interest toknow the effects of individual components. The main venom component is citotoxic polypeptide melittin (~50 %). Another polypeptide of thevenom is neurotoxic apamin. The most important enzyme and alllergen is phospholipase A2.
