Abstract     Cancer is a common name for a group ofapproximately 180 different drseases of more or less known etiology, and accordingly also different possibilities of their prevention. Development of a particular type of cancer depends on a range of synergistically acting factors from the environment, lifestyle, genetic makeup, and chance. Primary prevention involves changing lifestyle and environmental factors by health education and legislation. Several factors associated with an increased cancer risk as smoking, alcohol beverages, diet, reproductive and sexual behaviour, occupation, environmentalpollution, certain drugs, ionising and nonionising radiation, biologic and psychologic factors are discussed along with the possible preventive measures.
