Abstract     Background. In thisprospective comparativestudy, the authors assessed the acute and chronic effects of hydrotherapy in ordinary and thermomineral water on backpain patients. M . Twenty-ninepatients ofboth sexes and various age with different spine problems were enrolled for the study. They had ten days of 20-minute hydrotherapy in ordinary water of 32 degrees. All of them were examined prior to the hydrotherapy, after the therapy and again after 6 weeks. Then the subjects received ten days of hydrotherapy in thermomineral water, which was a combination of waters from wells Ve-2 and Ve-3 and had a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius. All the examinations were repeated prior to the hydrotherapy in thermomineral water as well as immediately after the therapy and after 6 weeks. Nineteen of the patients went through all phases of the study. Results. After the hydrotherapy in ordinary water, there was a slight improvement in patients' condition, which did not last until 6 weeks after the therapy. Hydrotherapy in thermomineral waterhad signficantly better effects in terms of alleviated pain, as well as reduced spine and lumbar muscles stiffness. The majority of the beneficial effects remained significant even 6 weeks after the therapy in thermomineral water had ended. Conclusions. Hydrotherapy in thermomineral water gave better and longer-lasting results for the majority of tested data compared to hydrotherapy in ordinary water; the difference was statistically significant. Further studies should be made for a larger number of patients with equal temperature for both types of water.
